Water Act Modernization Submissions

Overview

Engaging with British Columbians on Water Act Modernization includes two important stages. Stage One (complete) began in December 2009 with the launch of the Living Water Smart Blog. The Ministry of Environment released a Water Act Modernization Discussion Paper and Technical Background Report in February 2010 and delivered 12 regional workshops in March and April 2010.

Building on the input received during Stage One, the Ministry initiated Stage Two by releasing a Policy Proposal on British Columbia’s new Water Sustainability Act in December 2010.

Many respondents have posted comments directly to the Blog. In addition, links to submissions received by e-mail, fax or regular mail during each stage are provided below.

Stage One Engagement

Dec. 2009 – May 2010

Stage One is summarized in the Water Act Modernization Report on Engagement, released in September 2010. All submissions received in response to the Water Act Modernization Discussion Paper are provided below. The submissions are organized into three main categories: First Nations, broad Stakeholder Group and Individual submissions. We arranged submissions into stakeholder groups based on self-identification with definable sectors, organizations and associations. Individual submissions are organized into nine volumes, based on the submission method and to ensure manageable file sizes.

Stage Two Engagement

Dec. 2010 – March 2011

In response to the high level of public interest and requests for more participation, the Ministry committed to providing the public with additional opportunities to comment on specific Water Act modernization proposals. Building on the comments, submissions and dialogue of Stage One, a Policy Proposal on British Columbia’s new Water Sustainability Act was released in December 2010 and comments were received until March 2011.

During Stage Two, the Living Water Smart Blog was the primary focus of the engagement on the proposed Act.
